Applied Biosystems QStar XL

The QSTAR® hybrid LC/MS/MS System is a high-performance, hybrid quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometer designed for proteomics, drug discovery and development, metabolomics, and biomarker research.

  • Enhanced ion optics provide the highest sensitivity and stability
  • Unique pulsing/trapping capabilities and patented LINAC® collision cell technology enable you to scan precursor and product ions sensitively.
  • Excellent mass accuracy ensures you obtain unequivocal molecular weight and high-quality structural information.
  • Extended MS and MS/MS mass range (6,000 and 40,000 m/z) broadens the reach of protein and peptide studies.
  • Comprehensive selection of interchangeable, application-specific ion sources offers optimal flexibility.

The TurboIonSpray® source is a heated ion spray source that accepts flow rates from 2μL-1ml/min. This source is useful for quantitation at high sensitivity and high flow rates

The IonSpray source is a general usage source for normal electrospray flow rates (1-5μl/min).

The nanospray source extends the versatility of the QStar ion source techniques. It is an ultra low flow source designed for minimal sample consumption and highest sensitivity at flow rates from 2 nl/min to 2μl/min. Nanospray is ideal for analyzing biological samples such as proteins while using very small sample amounts. Other features of the nanoSpray source are:

  • Almost 100% sample utilization
  • High sensitivity as the ionization technique results in fine droplets for ionization
  • Easy installation and exchange for other ion sources with the QStar series of instruments
  • CCTV monitors for positioning the emitter accurately and for observing spray.
The nanospray source is also interconvertible simply by changing the spray head for continuous low flow applications, such as liquid chromatography. This allows for chromatographic separations using nanoflow LC systems with flow rates as low as 50nl/min.

Associated with the QStarXL instrument we have a Dionex/LC Packings Ultimate™ nanoLC system. This consists a nanoflow binary pump, autosampler with cooling capabilities, and a second isocratic pump with switching valve (Switchos®) for pre-concentration and desalting of dilute samples.

The standard LC columns that we use on this system are Dionex C18 Pepmap100 (75μm i.d. x 15cm). With a flow rate of 150nl/min this allows separation, MS and automated MS/MS of a protein digest within 60 minutes. Data processing within Analyst or BioAnalyst enables database searching with MASCOT™ for protein identification.
